Before I officially started my online business as a web designer for female entrepreneurs, I had heard so much about SEO. As an online business owner, the first thing I was itching to do was design my website, get it launched, and put it out there. I thought that after creating and launching my website, I was good to go. And boy, was I wrong.
Creating my website was only the beginning; now I had to actually drive traffic to it! This is not an easy task, especially for beginners. I listened to many podcasts, read blogs, and so on, and kept hearing about SEO.
I’ll be honest with you, it sounded confusing, so I procrastinated. I thought it was something I could deal with later. However, procrastinating on SEO only slowed down my growth. I was intimidated by it. But now, I am here to help you overcome that intimidation, and learn why your business needs seo!
SEO stands for search engine optimization. It refers to how and where your website appears when someone types in a search term on Google, Bing, or any search engine. In short, you want your website to appear on the first page, or else very few people will visit it. This is why your business needs SEO, and good SEO! But how can you get yourself on the first page? I am here to help you understand this in a simplified and non-confusing way!
This is an easy tip I learned when using Showit. In the panel section for ordering your layers, you want to arrange them from bottom to top. So, whatever appears at the top of your website should be layered at the bottom. Elements don’t matter, but your text needs to be ordered correctly. This helps Google’s computers read your website in the right order so that it understands what your website is all about and can show it to the right audience!
Optimizing your images will help your website load quickly, keeping visitors engaged for longer. You might be surprised by how much image optimization matters, but it does! Optimizing your images can be simple.
Make sure your image sizes are 3500px on the long side before uploading them to Showit.
Ensure your images are in JPEG format, unless you need a transparent background.
Download and use ImageOptim to easily optimize your image sizes while preserving image quality! ImageOptim is as simple as drag, drop, and you’re good to go!
Easy peasy!
When your website is fresh and new, your goal is to rank for low-hanging keywords that are relevant to your business. One tool that I love to use is Keysearch.
With Keysearch, I can easily type in any keyword ideas I have, and it will provide the score and volume size. The score indicates how easy it is to rank for that keyword, while the volume tells you how many people are searching for that topic.
Your goal is to find keywords with a low score and high volume.
There is so much more to SEO, but start with these three tips. My next blog post will dive even deeper into your next steps after completing your keyword research, so be sure to subscribe to stay up to date with my latest blog.
