The Costly Mistake I Made with My Business Logo

As a business owner, I know firsthand how overwhelming it can be to juggle countless tasks while trying to build a thriving business from the ground up. When I first started my business, I felt like my to-do list was never-ending, and I was constantly searching for shortcuts. Little did I know that one of my shortcuts was actually costing my business potential customers and revenue. What was it? My logo.

Here’s what I did: I visited Canva, found a cute template, added my business name, tweaked the colors, clicked “download,” and uploaded it to my website. I thought I had it all figured out – now I had a logo. But I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Canva logos, and similar templates, are incredibly convenient, but they can be detrimental to your business. Why? They’re generic. Anyone can take that same template, slap their name on it, and voila – you end up with the same logo as countless others. It’s tough to stand out in the business world when you look like everyone else.

What’s worse, it can make your business appear amateurish, even if you’re just starting out (remember, fake it till you make it). Even if your business is brand new, you don’t want it to look that way. You want it to radiate professionalism, organization, and cohesion. This conveys to your clients and customers that your products and services are reliable, which makes them more comfortable spending their hard-earned money with you.

You might think that no one will notice that your logo came from a template, but trust me, they can tell.

Here’s a pro tip from a branding designer: Your logo should always be vectorized. Canva logos, as well as many Etsy logos and other premade templates, are not vectorized. Vectorizing your logo ensures that it can be resized and printed without becoming blurry or pixelated.

So, while Canva, Etsy, and other pre-made templates may offer convenience and speed, they might not always be the best choice for your business’s branding needs.
